Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 114: Author, Trainer and Founder of Amentora Inc., Robert Riopel

Have you ever had dreams (especially as a child) that did not come to fruition and then felt frustrated? We all have including Robert Raymond Riopel, the author of the best-selling book “Success Left A Clue”.

As a child Robert remembers having big dreams. One day he was a lawyer, the next a doctor or truck driver or even an astronaut. Anything and everything was possible. However, as he started to get older, life taught him that dreams don’t always come true, especially if you do not have the right education or come from the “Right” side of the tracks and are born into a wealthy family. These conditionings and beliefs started to take Robert’s life in a direction of playing smaller than he was. Luckily he had people in his life that were not willing to let him go in that direction and because of these people believing in him, Robert has made it his mission to assist others in living the life of their dreams as well.

It all began when after some success, Robert and his wife found themselves deep in debt and struggling. Thanks to guidance from total strangers, they started their journey in personal development and quickly turned things around. Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 110: Grassroots Local Politics with Jim White and Tom Yeager

SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN. INDEPENDENT LEADER. STRONG REPUBLICAN.

Jim White is a husband, father, coach, small businessman and taxpayer with a 25-year career building businesses and protecting companies from cyberattacks. A lifelong Republican, Jim was taught to work hard at an early age – owning a grass cutting business, working at gas stations, doing construction and pool cleaning work all through high school. Now he’s focused on giving back to the community where he and his wife have lived, worked and raised their daughters for the last 14 years. With a promise to bring his tireless work ethic to township government, Jim vows to help control local spending to hold the line on taxes while providing the services that make Upper Providence one of the best places to live in the entire region. Service to our community is not new for Jim. Jim has been an active coach and mentor to our youth for more than half a decade, serving as an Upper Providence Little League tee ball and softball coach as well as a Spring Ford Youth basketball coach. Public service runs through Jim’s blood – his great uncle served as a Member of Congress from Pennsylvania, his grandfather was a Philadelphia police officer while his mom was a nurse and his father worked at the Naval Air Warfare Center in Warminster for 30 years. Jim has also served the Republican Party as an elected Upper Providence Committeeman, was an Executive Committee member of the Montgomery County Republican Committee and traveled to Cleveland as an Alternate Delegate to the Republican National Committee in 2016. Jim currently serves the UP Board of Supervisors as the Vacancy Board Chairman. Working his way through college, Jim built a life as he finished his education, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2006 from Immaculata University and taking MBA classes at Delaware Valley University to continue his pursuit of higher education. Jim knows good schools are critical to our success as a township – and region – but also know we must control taxes at every level so funding our future doesn’t cripple retirees and working families with high taxes today. Jim will use his businesses and professional skills to find that balance in local government. Jim and his wife of nearly 20 years, Tracey, own a home in Phoenixville. Together, they also operate several successful business ventures, including a security company that focuses on emerging industries as well as rental properties they own and manage. Jim and Tracey have raised their daughters in Upper Providence – with their oldest attending Aim Academy in Conshohocken and their youngest in 6th grade at Spring Ford Middle School. Their five-year-old Westie, Lilly, is the fifth member of their family. An independent leader committed to making government more open, more transparent, and more responsive for the people it serves, Jim will be a champion for all Upper Providence residents in elected office. Called to serve his community, Jim is running for Supervisor to work for those who work hard every day.

A CITIZEN, TAXPAYER & FISCAL EXPERT READY TO PUT TAXPAYERS FIRST

Tom Yeager is not a career politician – he’s one of us: a local businessman, father, husband, and coach. Tom is ready to serve and bring our Republican principles of fiscal conservatism to township government to protect taxpayers and focus on real priorities that make our community even better. The son of a hardworking engineer and a stay-at-home mom, Tom learned early the value of hard work - and then used what he learned to succeed in life. Working and paying his way through college, Tom earned a degree in Business Logistics from Penn State University. He then continued to hard work toward success in the business world, rising today to the position of Vice President of Supply Chain and Customer Service at a Fortune 500 company where he oversees a budget of $300 million. His proven skills at fiscal oversight and increasing efficiency will help taxpayers here in Upper Providence as he ensures township government works effectively for residents by delivering high quality services at the best possible cost. In addition to his work at St. Gobain, Tom sits as a member of two companies’ Executive Management teams helping them to control costs, meet positive outcomes for employees and customers, and demand accountability and transparency – the same goals he will meet as our next Supervisor. Tom is also committed to a stronger future for Upper Providence as only a dad can be – ready to fight hard to improve the opportunities we leave for the next generation. Tom and his wife, Christina, have been married for 10 years and are raising their blended family together as proud parents of Christina’s three children and their 9-year-old twins, all of whom attend Spring Ford schools. The Yeagers are family members of Rivercrest Golf Club where they are avid golfers and active members. In fact, they’re very much like so many families in our area – enjoying movie nights, dinners and family vacations throughout the year as time and money allow. Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 106: Doug Ellin - Creator, Writer and Director of the hit HBO Series Entourage and co-host of Victory The Podcast

Ellin was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of June and Marvin Ellin. He grew up in Merrick, New York and graduated from John F. Kennedy High School (Bellmore, New York). Before producing and writing for Entourage, Ellin served as a staff writer for Life with Bonnie, which starred Bonnie Hunt. The series ran from 2003-2004. Ellin has also written screenplays for two films, Kissing a Fool and Phat Beach. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s to be a stand-up comedian and soon got a job in the mail room at New Line Cinema. It was there where he befriended film producer Mike DeLuca who funded Ellin's first short film The Pitch, starring then unknown actor David Schwimmer. That short film got Ellin accepted to the American Film Institute, where he graduated from in 1994. In 1996, he directed the independent comedy film Phat Beach. The film was made on a very low budget, and Ellin has called it "Probably the worst movie ever made". Two years later, Ellin made another independent comedy film Kissing a Fool, starring David Schwimmer, who was now known due to his role on Friends which was in its fourth season. Kissing a Fool was sold for distribution and Ellin subsequently sold a few screenplays to Miramax. One, The Pledge was never produced although Ellin was paid seven figures for the script and was set to direct. He sold another unproduced screenplay for mid-six figures. Ellin's real success came in 2004 with Entourage. The HBO show ran for eight seasons and Ellin made an eight-figure pact with HBO to continue producing television. Ellin wrote and directed the 2015 film adaptation of Entourage. Today, he and Emmy nominated star Kevin Dillon, host a weekly comedy podcast called "Victory The Podcast", where they relive the hit HBO show, one episode at a time. Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 104: Philadelphia Rock and Roll Legend, Nick Lightning

Nick Lightning, also known by his given name Nick Fergus, is a 44-year-old Autistic man who lives the life of a real-life rock star. For the last 28 years, Nick has been transforming himself into his alter-ego, Nick Lightning, entertaining audiences big and small all around the globe (in all honesty, it is just the Roxborough section of Philadelphia) with his one-of-a-kind air guitar/keyboard/drums/lip syncing shows. Nick embodies the words JOY and Gratitude. He lives in a world that few of us ever get a chance to visit, let alone call our home. He honestly believes that he has toured the world as Nick Lightning. He can rattle off his most memorable shows in Hawaii, Japan and many other amazing cities where he, in his mind, lit the stage on fire (sometimes literally). The story of Nick Fergus is a heartwarming tale about a man who was born with a disability that doctors could not define until he was officially diagnosed with Autism at age 44. Born into a blue-collar town in Philadelphia to a family with loving parents and a highly intelligent older sister, Nick was forced to adapt in a mainstream environment. His parents were left without answers, other than a generic ADD diagnosis combined with a learning disability. Life was hard and depressing for Nick from a young age, as he was an easy target for bullies, both in his neighborhood and in the special schools he attended. He needed an outlet, something to help him escape from the hardships of being ridiculed and not fitting in. He chose music and he dove in headfirst. Not only did he watch MTV and listen to music constantly, but he soaked it up like a sponge. He is a breathing music encyclopedia and someone who can "name that tune" and the artist after hearing just a few seconds of any rock song. As if this were not enough to keep him occupied, he then decided to become a rock star just like those he idolized. It did not matter what anyone thought or what musical talent he possessed; he created the alter ego of Nick Lightning when he was 15 yrs old. He has never looked back since, hosting free shows open to the public at local recreation centers, in which he is a one-man crew and performer. While he never did have musical talent and was unable to learn such over the years, he performed with passion, energy and enthusiasm. While Nick Fergus can be hurt by cruelty, Nick Lightning is impervious to the bullies and naysayers. Outside of his music, Nick is a productive member of society who has held basic jobs since he was old enough to do so. He also volunteered his time at the local recreation centers and playgrounds in his neighborhood, doing anything that was asked of him. He loves people and living in the moment. He treats every day as a miracle and a blessing...each day is the best day ever through the eyes of Nick. Be on the lookout for a documentary being filmed about him too, aptly titled “Nick Lightning”. And if the stars align, Nick Lightning might get the chance play on the biggest stage in the world, Hollywood. That would be the greatest ending to an amazing Rock and Roll Career! For more information you can follow Nick on Facebook @ Nick Lightining.

Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 101: Brian Quinn, Lead Guitarist for the band Candlebox

As the lead guitarist for multi-platinum rock band Candlebox, Brian Quinn has traveled the world performing in front of crowds as large as 90,000 at a time and sharing the stage with some of most iconic legends in the industry. But to this life-long musician, he’s just as happy performing to an audience of 100 as 100,000. Because for him, it’s all about the music. It always has. Drawn to the guitar at a very early age, he first picked up the guitar at the young age of five and was playing sold-out shows by the age of 15 with his hardcore band Burial Ground (1990-1996). He, then, spent six years performing in the hardcore circuit with what was considered one of the most influential acts of that time, inadvertently being credited with “inventing” the sub-genre of hardcore music described today as “Bloodcore”. Burial Ground released an independent album that received rave reviews from fans and critics alike. But, by 17 larger things were calling and Quinn headed to Philadelphia in search of something more. Soon after arriving in the city of Brotherly Love, he co-founded the Philadelphia-based rock band Octane (2000-2005). Still considered to this day as one of the most successful bands to come out of Philly, Octane sold more than 65,000 copies of their independent debut release and enjoyed more than 1000 spins of the single “I For One” on Philadelphia rock station 94.1 WYSP. During this time, Quinn was named “Best Guitarist” in the Philadelphia region by the Philadelphia Music Awards in 2001 and 2004 and was routinely praised by fans and critics alike for his signature guitar technique, his ability on “slide” guitar, and dynamic on-stage presence. After enjoying five successful years with Octane, Quinn left the band to found a blues-based hard rock band that would later become known as Fosterchild. This project would quickly gain national attention and the band was signed to the SMG/ILG/WARNER record label from 2007-2010. The band hit the road on a U.S. tour and it was then that Quinn met Kevin Martin, lead singer of Candlebox. Immediately impressed with Quinn’s talent, Martin promised him he’d one day have a spot in Candlebox. Quinn continued to tour the country with Fosterchild and even garnered a special invitation to perform for the U.S. troops stationed at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, where the group performed in front of thousands of soldiers on New Year’s Eve of 2010. Quinn has been invited to perform at NAMM Ultimate Jam Night for the past two years, alongside Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan and many other iconic artists. He routinely guests with the American Vinyl All Star Band featuring Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (Steely Dan/Doobie Bros.), Barry Goudreau (formerly of the band Boston), Robert “Mousey” Thompson (Wilson Pickett/James Brown), Leroy Romans (Third World / The Wailers), and Tim Archibald (Peter Wolf / RTZ). A proficient studio musician as well, Quinn provided the critically-acclaimed guitar work on Candlebox’s last album Disappearing In Airports, which debuted at #9 on the Billboard Charts, as well as the 2017 release of Disappearing Live. He most recently contributed his axe-work to Candlebox’s forthcoming album Wolves, which is slated for a September 2021 release and has also lent his guitar skills to a myriad of artists across multiple genres of music. During his career, Quinn shared the stage with such acts as: Ozzy Osbourne, Slash’s Snakepit, Gene Simmons, Metallica, Kid Rock, Disturbed, Judas Priest, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sixx AM, Chevelle, 3 Doors Down, Seether, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, Candlebox, Tantric, Shinedown, Robert Randolph & The Family, Alter Bridge, Godsmack, Taproot, Nonpoint, Mudvayne, Deftones, Zakk Wylde, Black Label Society, Buckcherry, Warren Haynes, Marshall Tucker, Devo, Finger Eleven, and the House Of Blues All-Stars (with whom he performed alongside rock legends Jeffrey “Skunk” Baxter of Doobie Bros & Steely Dan, Fran Sheehan and Barry Goudreau of Boston, drum phenom Kenny Aranoff (John Mellecamp, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction, Alanis Morrisette), and James Montgomery of Johnny Winter fame). Quinn is currently endorsed by Gibson Guitars, D'Addario Strings, Planet Waves Accessories, The Rock Slide by the Songhurst Guitar Company, and LPS Clothing. When did the "Silent Professional's" become "The Brand"?  Why did the Navy SEAL Brand become so powerful and so public when their mission is meant to be so secret and so clandestine?  Is there a pattern of lying, corruption, criminality and manipulation within the SEAL Community that has grown in severity over the last 20 plus years?  In this episode, I detail a couple of these factual events and take the listener through my logical thought processes and analysis to show them how this is ACTUALLY happening today in one of the world's most elite special operations communities.  For more information please visit www.mattcubbler.com.

Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 95: Child Abuse Survivor and Podcast Host, Lucas Mack

If we met, you’d never know that I’m a survivor of pretty horrific childhood abuse and trauma. Because on the outside, I look like the average “nice guy” with everything anyone could ever want. The supportive and beautiful wife. The adorable and sweet children. The successful track record. The outgoing personality. The dream house. The big smile. Nothing about my life screams—he’s wounded! But beneath the surface of that perfect picture used to be a man who was severely depressed, anxious, and—at one point—suicidal. It wasn’t until 2016 that I understood why. It took one little moment—a conversation with my abuser, in fact—to trigger a sudden and endless stream of flashbacks into my childhood. Like small scenes from a movie, I was reliving moments I had locked away. Moments I had “deleted” from memory because they were that horrific. At first, I tried to cope by diving deeper into my business—working harder, working later, distracting in whatever way I could. But when it became too painful to bear and clear that I couldn’t manage it alone—through therapy or medication, I found another way. In fact, I did something pretty scary. I went to an emotional intelligence seminar where I revealed my deepest truth to a whole group of people. I spoke words out loud that I had only thought about saying. Words that carried great shame and great pain. I looked at the abuse, at my abusers, at everything that had been hidden for so many years. And as I spoke, yelled, cried, and let myself be seen, something miraculous happened. For the first time in my life, I felt like I could breath. As if I’d been living under water for decades and finally came to the surface pulling in a long overdue lung-full of air. Lightness. Something I’d never felt before. Arrived. And I recognized that in facing the pain, speaking out loud, releasing the emotion, and being held in non-judgment by my fellow attendees—I was FREE and more importantly HEALING. I had broken the cycle. This experience changed my life AND it ignited a spark—a knowing within me that it was time to use my voice in a bigger way, a more authentic way. To be courageous enough to tell my story. You see, what I’d experienced was profound and needed on a much larger scale, especially for men. Something that could save so many from the numb and limiting life I had been choosing for so long. Since stepping into what I know is my life’s work, I have the privilege of awakening audiences all over the world to the power of love and vulnerability as a means to HEAL from various forms of trauma and abuse. Today, my mission is to give men permission to face their trauma, heal emotional wounds, and experience love in its purest form so that they are free to live life with authenticity, power, and purpose. Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 76: Rocks for L.E.O.

In June of 2017 my husband found a painted rock outside a local business. He brought it home and we looked up the FB page that was written on the back. It was from a local rock painting group that paints rocks and leaves them outside businesses for people to find. All with the purpose to spread kindness or make someone smile. Almost immediately we started painting and dropping rocks all over town. A couple months later I thought, wouldn’t it be nice to paint some Back the Blue rocks and leave them outside our local departments, and possibly even hand them to LEOs we see out and about? I asked the girls and they loved the idea. We painted two rocks to start. In August we took the first rock up to our Sheriff. We told him we wanted to show our thanks and appreciation for all they do, and all about our plan to start painting more rocks. The second rock we prayed that God would help us find the right deputy or officer for our rock. We wanted to give it to someone who needed it, or would appreciate it, you know, the right person! It took 2 months (it’s now October) actively looking while running errands until we found a deputy. Actually he found us as he had been in our neighborhood taking care of some business. We stopped him before he could leave and gave it to him. We couldn’t have asked for a better officer to receive our rock. Not only did we become fast friends with him and his family, but he’s the kind of friend you think of as family. He even helped us be able to visit our local precinct to hand out rocks during roll call one morning, which was truly an awesome experience! We loved surprising all of the deputies. We started painting more rocks to hand out whenever we would see a LEO out and about on the road (We always make sure to keep some in the car with us)! We’ve visited with several other departments nearby as well. The girls LOVE meeting LEOs! They ask me at least twice a week, “Are we going to any departments today?” Good thing there are a lot of departments out there! In February 2018, I thought “I should Google small town departments” and see what I can come up with. I was hoping to surprise them with our rocks. I thought it would be nice for them to know they are thought of and appreciated, even from far away. We found a 4 person department in Michigan. They loved the rocks so much they sent us a patch, their cards, and a bottle of maple syrup that is made right there in their town! So we kept looking for more departments. We have found small departments, big departments, and everything in between. We started painting and shipping rocks all over the states! We started posting on social media asking for people to nominate their favorite departments to receive our rocks. Our list grew to over 60 departments across the states within a couple hours of putting out the message! Since then we’ve continued to grow, our waiting-to-be-rocked list is multiple pages long, and we have sent rocks to 3,516 LEOs (as of February 27, 2020). 3,516!!! Over 3,500 LEOs know that they are supported, thought of, prayed for, appreciated, and THANKED by our family. Most days it leaves me speechless when I think about what we have been able to do for LEOs. We’ve reached so many, yet we have so many more to reach! Did I mention dispatchers? We try to include dispatchers as much as we can, with their own rocks featuring the thin gold line. We want to make sure they know they are appreciated as well! So that’s our story. It’s currently still being written, as we have no plans of stopping anytime soon! We are so thankful for our LEOs & dispatchers, and so thankful we are able to do this for them. Our rocks have blessed us with many friendships in real life and through social media. I can’t even express to you what that means to us. Thank you Blue! Be safe & ROCK ON! Your friends in Maryland, -RocksForLEOs

Two Dates and a Dash Episode 69: Author of NY Times Best Selling Book, Alone at Dawn and sister of Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, USAF Master Sgt. John Chapman

In the predawn hours of March 4, 2002, just below the 10,469-foot peak of a mountain in eastern Afghanistan, a fierce battle raged. Outnumbered by Al Qaeda fighters, Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman and a handful of Navy SEALs struggled to take the summit in a desperate bid to find a lost teammate. Chapman, leading the charge, was gravely wounded in the initial assault. Believing he was dead, his SEAL leader ordered a retreat. Chapman regained consciousness alone, with the enemy closing in on three sides. John Chapman's subsequent display of incredible valor -- first saving the lives of his SEAL teammates and then, knowing he was mortally wounded, single-handedly engaging two dozen hardened fighters to save the lives of an incoming rescue squad -- posthumously earned him the Medal of Honor. Chapman is the first airman in nearly fifty years to be given the distinction reserved for America's greatest heroes. Alone at Dawn is also a behind-the-scenes look at the Air Force Combat Controllers: the world's deadliest and most versatile special operations force, whose members must not only exceed the qualifications of Navy SEAL and Army Delta Force teams but also act with sharp decisiveness and deft precision -- even in the face of life-threatening danger. Drawing from firsthand accounts, classified documents, dramatic video footage, and extensive interviews with leaders and survivors of the operation, Alone at Dawn is the story of an extraordinary man's brave last stand and the brotherhood that forged him.

Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 61: Unanswered Questions- The Life and Death of Cmdr. Job Price, Commander SEAL Team 4

Commander Job Wilson Price was a graduate of Pottstown High School where he played football and wrestled - taking great pride in his school. Job was an excellent student and was accepted to many prestigious universities, including Yale, but Job wanted to give back through service to his country and made the decision to go to the United States Air Force Academy, cross commissioning into the United States Navy SEALS after he graduated. One of the many things that made my brother exceptional was that he was not only a Navy SEAL, but also a United States Army Ranger.

During his 20-year career Job served a total of 13 deployments to places such as Central and South America, Kosovo, the Middle-East (specifically Iraq and Afghanistan), and Africa, as well as many places we probably don’t know about. Job was assigned to SEAL Teams Two and Four, U.S Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). Job received numerous medals including four Bronze Stars yet he was never one to speak of it. My brother lost his life on December 22 2012 in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan while serving as the Commander of SEAL Team Four. Job always wanted to belong to the best and be a part of something far greater than oneself. To his credit, he achieved those goals.

Job's death was "officially" ruled a suicide, however after further investigation in the 7 years since his death, there are more questions than answers as it relates to the nature of his death and how it was handled by the Navy. In the years since his death in 2012, there have been numerous confirmed reports of systemic corruption and criminality within the SEAL community. This podcast was designed to bring to light Job's amazing life, his service to our great nation and the serious concern over the validity of the "official cause of death" and how the US Navy handled it. The vast majority of all the heroic men and women who serve our great nation are worthy of the praise and recognition they deserve. However, it appears as if a small segment of the US Navy SEAL community is bringing a negative light onto an otherwise prideful community of dedicated war-fighters. We honor those who served honorably and only wish to expose those who did not.

Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 55: 11 year NFL vet, philanthropist and entrepreneur, Todd Herremans

Selected in the fourth round of the 2005 draft pick out of Saginaw Valley State by the Philadelphia Eagles, Herremans played in 127 regular-season games (124 starts) and eight playoff games (all starts) as an Eagle, spanning the positions of left tackle, left guard, and right tackle. Herremans started four games at left tackle after former Pro Bowler Tra Thomas went down with a back injury late in the 2005 season. The Eagles moved Herremans to left guard in 2006, where he started all 16 games. He signed a five-year contract extension after the season after being part of an offensive line that allowed just 28 sacks in 2006, the fewest for the Eagles since 1981.
When Herremans caught his November 2, 2008, touchdown pass against the Seattle Seahawks, he became the first offensive lineman for the Eagles to catch a touchdown pass since 1934, the franchise's second season. A left guard from 2006 to 2010, the Eagles move Herremans to right tackle for the 2011 season, and to right guard in 2013, where he spent his final two years with the Eagles. Herremans played his final season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2015.
Herremans had 124 career starts over the course of 10 seasons, which ranks him sixth all-time among Eagles' offensive lineman. He is the only offensive lineman in franchise history to register two touchdown receptions (one-yard pass from QB Donovan McNabb in 2008 and a two-yard pass from Michael Vick in 2010).
In 2012, Herremans founded The Herremans Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that provides resources and help for various charitable organizations, to effect positive change in local, national and global communities.
Since retiring from the NFL, Herremans helped co-found Athletes For CARE, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating a community where all athletes can find support, opportunity, and purpose in life following a career in sports. Herremans is an advocate for medicinal cannabis as one of many wellness alternatives to traditional forms of pain management such as opioids, to treat chronic pain and sports-related injuries

Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 54: Speaker, Life Coach, Mentor and Founder of Me Inc. Now, Charles Prinzen

Where I am now is no coincidence to where I have been, yes, I am a survivor! What have I survived, not war, not physical disabilities, but cycles of life. My story of abuse is no different than many others who have experienced abuse, the same torment, pain, feelings of loneliness and despair. So, the big question is why did I change? My journey from nothingness to a fulfilling life was not altered by one specific event, but a series of events over many years, change came one thought at a time. It was not till I was older that I could clearly see the past; they say that hindsight is twenty-twenty, mine was not, it was blurry. The first step to seeing the past clearly was when a kindhearted gift of love was given to me by a stranger. A stranger that chose to pull me into her household and show me that you can eat and sleep and play without fear, that you can share feeling with others, and that a hug is the best way to express how you feel about someone. This was something new to me, perhaps I was scared not knowing what was ahead as the only cycle of living I knew was ugliness. At the age of nine I tasted hard liquor for the first time. I knew what a broom handle felt like across my back, how my skin would react when hit from an open hand. Age sixteen I was enrolled in my twenty-fifth public school and this is the age where I found myself running away, not just from home, but everything. It is here where my transformation really begins. This is when I was first shown how a home should be, full of love. It took me a long time to realize that my opportunityfor change had been there, right there, all I had to do was to want it. Perhaps it is best of me to offer an analogy as to how my change occurred. If you think about life cycles, they are round and usually end up at the same point over and over, like a race track. When your cycle of life is good, there is no need to search for an off-ramp, you’re’already going down the “right” path. When on the wrong cycle of life for so long, the exits can become obscured due to hopelessness, you can only find an exit if you really want to change. I wanted to change and found an exit, I took the “right” turn to something better. Taking the “right” turn was very difficult to do, I realized, with time, that to set a new cycle of life I would have to clear up the past. Emotionally, I set my mind on forgiving the past and those who had hurt me. Standing at my step-father’s grave, I forgave him, it took every ounce of emotional strength that I had to do this, and I was completely drained of all energy. Immediately afterward, I felt something, something anew, the wheels of my life cycles had started to make the turn. As I reflect upon my cycles of life, the cycles of ugliness were clearly evident, the most obvious to me was with my biological father. I did not see him, hear from him, or have anycontact with him at all. I did not know from where I came or who I was, intellectually, emotionally, or physically. I quickly realized that Iwas doing the same to my daughter, cycles repeating cycles. Continuing forward I was going to do everything in my power to break this cycle, and I did. I re-connected with my daughter, provided financial and emotional support, and broke this cycle. Once this cycle had broken, others fell like dominos. My new cycles of life are extraordinary, a complete reversal of what my past had been. I ran a successful auto carrier company for twenty plus years. I worked my way up in this industry to become a union steward helping many other drivers find the success that I have had. Throughout this process the cycles of ugliness continued to be broken, so much so I wanted to give to others when I no longer was a truck driver. Knowing that my cycles of ugliness were mostly in my youth, this is where I sought to intervene. I interviewed for a position as a campus supervisor at a high school in northern California, and got it. Still I, working at a campus where I had only faltered as a young person, seemed to be ironic. So I started, one student at a time, shared my stories, my fears, and my successes. Students began to listen and identify their own cycles of ugliness, perhaps a few had found the “right” turn off that cycle. As a campus supervisor I saw a need for someone to be an advocate for youth, someone to help them see their own past clearly. I started a public speaking entity knows as Me.Inc. Now®, “me expressing I need change now”. It is my principal goal to help instill self-worth, self-esteem, and self-respect in today’s youth. Today, after choosing to make a change in my life, I am there for my grandchildren’s needs, I have established positive relationships with long lost family members, I embrace the chance, once again, to be a father to my daughter and a grand father to my grandchildren. I am thankful for the opportunity to share my story with others, I am thankful for what I now have. Most importantly, I am thankful for learning that “love” is most the powerful tool in my emotional toolbox. I did it, I had changed for the better, no more thought of sorrow and loneliness, no more bruises, no more pain, no more fear.

Two Dates and a Dash Podcast Episode 51: College Football Coach, Author and MS Warrior, Frank Hickson

Frank Hickson brings over 30 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Flames' football coaching staff, including 11 years at the NCAA Division I-A level and 16 years as a running backs coach, the same position he oversaw as a part of the Flames' football program.
Since joining the Flames' program, Hickson has continued the running back tradition at Liberty. He aided in the Flames finishing the 2004 season ranked 22nd in the nation in rushing (212.2 yards per game). He helped Dre Barnes finish as the school's all-time leading rushing in 2004 with 4,035 yards.
Hickson was also instrumental in helping guide Liberty's newest "rising star" and current member of the Houston Texans, Samkon Gado, during his senior campaign, and Eugene Goodman of the AFL's Columbus Destroyers. In 2005, Hickson helped running back Zach Terrell become Liberty's first-ever Big South Rookie of the Year.
Hickson instructed one of the best running back tandems in program history. Rashad Jennings became the sixth running back in school history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark, helping Liberty rank 19th nationally in rushing yards (195.0 per game). Jennings and Terrell both reached double figures in rushing touchdowns, becoming the second rushing pair to accomplish the feat since 1973.
Prior to his time at Liberty, Hickson's served a two-year stint at Oklahoma State as the running backs coach during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. During his time at Oklahoma State, he instructed All-Big 12 running backs Reggie White and Tatem Bell, who is now with the Detroit Lions, while also instructing Tim Burrows, who signed a contract with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons.
In 1998, Hickson was the head coach at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. During the 1996 and 1997 seasons, he served as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach at North Texas where he helped the Mean Green post victories over Utah State and in-state rival Texas Tech in 1997. He also coached Juqua Wilburn, North Texas' all-time leading rusher.
Hickson had a memorable stay at South Carolina for two years (1994 and 1995). He was part of the first Gamecock program to post a victory in a bowl game when South Carolina defeated West Virginia in the 1994 Blockbuster/National Car Rental Bowl game on New Year's Day. While at South Carolina, Hickson was responsible for the coaching of four NFL running backs in the Arizona Cardinals' Troy Hambrick, Pittsburgh Steelers' Duce Staley and former Cincinnati Bengal Brandon Bennett and former Chicago Bear Stanley Pritchett.
Hickson also served as the running backs coach for four years at the United States Naval Academy (1990-93), one year at Temple (1989), three years at Marshall (1986-88), one year at Mesa State College (1985) and two years as a graduate assistant at Wichita State (1983-84), while earning his master's degree in education.
While at the Naval Academy, Hickson recruited quarterback Chris McCoy, a Heisman Trophy candidate, and defensive back Chris Hart, who are both members of the Hall of Fame at the Naval Academy.
While at Marshall, Hickson helped the Thundering Herd to two NCAA Division I-AA National Championship games in 1987 and 1988. Two Dates and a Dash Episode 1: "Long Road Home" star - US Army SGM (ret.) Reginald Butler

Sergeant Major Reginald Wayne Butler, U.S. Army, a native of Oklahoma, graduated from McAlester High School in 1992. He received a B.S. in business from Mount Saint Mary College in Newburg, New York in 2007; an M.B.A. in information technology management from Trident University International in Cypress, California, in 2010; and is currently pursuing a D.B.A. in leadership from Walden University, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
He was raised in poverty by a single mother of five children, who had a loving heart and faced many obstacles but never complained. She blessed Butler with a warm heart, good manners, and inspired him to follow his passion and intuition. As a child, Butler had behavioral problems, a speech impediment and was fitted with leg braces. Numerous Pediatric Doctors informed his mother that he would never be able to run or overcome the fear and tension in stuttering. Kids called him names such as Frankenstein and Stutterbox until the age of 9 when he decided to overcome his challenges. Butler removed the leg braces, tossed them in a dumpster, and took off running, very much similar to Forrest Gump. By the 4th grade, Butler was the fastest kid in elementary school and later went on to win Regionals in track and field. Butler attended speech therapy throughout middle school, and he now enjoys inspiring people to overcome their obstacles and fears.

In 1991, toward the end of his junior year of high school, Butler joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard as an Infantrymen. He was the only African American in a 240-man company and had to overcome adversities related to racial discrimination but maintained a positive state of mind. Butler continued to break down obstacles within the organization and sought out the presence of younger soldiers who trusted him, believed in equal opportunity, and practiced dignity and respect. Butler found the resiliency to overcome the boundaries set before him and knew after graduating from High School the military life was going to be his destiny.
During his 25-year military career, Butler achieved the highest enlisted rank of Sergeant Major. He completed the rigorous U.S. Army Ranger School in 1998, which is the Army’s most rigorous course related to premier small unit tactics and leadership. In 2001, Butler accomplished the Bradley Master Gunner course, to become a trained expert on the weapon systems housed within military fighting vehicles. He values the attribute of leading from the front and ultimately gained the respect of his subordinates. Butler deployed to the Middle East, the Pacific, Europe and Continental U.S. stations.
During Operation Iraqi Freedom, Butler was a platoon sergeant of the Army’s First Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas, when a platoon-size element was ambushed in Sadr City, Baghdad, on April 4, 2004, also known as “Black Sunday.” Eight soldiers were killed and more than 70 injured during the attack. Butler’s Humvee gunner paid the ultimate sacrifice, and 17 out of 37 soldiers in his platoon were severely wounded. Butler had the hardest hit platoon with 20 soldiers remaining in the fight. His unit remained in sustained combat for 80 consecutive days.
Butler is portrayed in the National Geographic Channel’s “The Long Road Home,” an eight-part miniseries based on journalist Martha Raddatz’s 2007 book of the same title. He was mentioned on several occasions including one during which the Secretary of Defense recognized Butler in a lecture to more than 5,000 cadets and faculty members at the U.S. Military Academy in 2008 as a hero with real-world experience and wisdom in and out of the classroom. He has a passion for helping military members and people around the world to find their inner abilities to overcome daily challenges and to live a healthy, memorable and appealing lifestyle.
Butler seeks to inspire, motivate and challenge audiences to lead an authentic and inspired life.
